We have lots of older versions of files that more and more is growing.

Yes, you could create a schedule which archives old project states in the project configuration.
The age of the revision and the objects which should be archieved can be configured in the particular dialogs.
After executing this schedule entry all revisions which are older than the configured date won't be shown any longer.

I have tried it on a local Server and it works.
Only was my Data folder only 6% smaller. I hope when I roll it out on an environment with 300 GB Data folder, I will get bigger profit.
