When an asset is sent for translation a copy of that asset is made in a different locale and a "link" to that asset is created via a Relationship Config asset. The Relationship Config asset can be found under the /_TMF/Relationships Config/ folder and stores the ids of the related assets via the source_id and destination_id fields. It also stores the contents of the assets to help with tracking changes. Hopefully this helps.
