Is the AdChoices Opt Out tool a universal Opt Out?

Jump to solution

If I use the AdChoices tool in the Options Dialog, does that meet the DAA's guidance for complying with consumer control?

Today, that guidance describes two options for complying with the principle of consumer control:

  • Option 1: Providing access to an easy-to-use consumer choice mechanism—such as the DAA WebChoices tool—that allows the consumer to opt out of the collection, use, or transfer of data by companies that engage in IBA and have integrated into WebChoices.
  • Option 2: Listing every unrelated company collecting and using data for IBA on your website with links to their individual choice mechanisms.

Is the AdChoices tab in the Options Dialog a universal opt-out, or website specific?

The AdChoices Opt-Out tool in the UCP is a universal opt-out. It uses cookie-based opt-outs that drop on the visitor’s browser. These are the same cookies used in Ad Notice and the same cookies used in the DAA’s opt-out page.

Crownpeak has worked with the DAA for years, and was one of the first to adopt the AdChoices icon.

The non-universal opt-out – or default “Information We Collect” tab — is a completely different opt-out experience compared to the AdChoices cookie opt-outs. It was developed as a need for GDPR and is much more strict compared to cookie opt-outs. This is because it guarantees users aren’t targeted via ads by blocking the script from firing at the vendor level.
