The new client feels slow and less responsive than the previous one.  Loading previews takes longer and often the circle turns without reason (CPU idle). Are there any suggestions for tuning the Java Runtime or the client itself?

This sounds not like a client problem. Either the Tomcat ("loading previews takes longer") or the FirstSpirit-Server seems to be the problem..
