I know this is months old and I assume you found your answer elsewhere. But I will go ahead and provide an update to allow this to be closed out.
After installing the CDC, you should see the new "Crownpeak Desktop Connection" option under the tools menu. This provides the "configure" and "load template list" options that can be used to connect to the CP server.
There is also a toolbar control that can be docked that provides this functionality.
