Training for DXM Editors and Admins

Editing Images - Editing Content in V3

In this training, we will explore how to edit images within the CMS, using our built-in image editing tool.

By the end of this training, you should understand some best practices for managing images,  and using the built-in tools to make any necessary edits to an image.

We’ll begin by uploading a new image asset to see the entire image editing process. We’ll use a larger image, and see that once it’s uploaded, we can click on the file to open the image.

From here, click on the Edit mode to begin working with the image.

You will see all of the image editing options at the top of the screen. We’ll look at those in detail later.

First lets walk through an example.

In this example, we’ll crop the image to make it a more suitable size for the website. Click on Crop at the top. Next, drag your cursor over the image for the area you want to capture. Once you have the correction portion of the image, click apply. If you’re done editing the image, click Save.

This will automatically re-render with the cropped image in place of the larger image.

You can also edit directly from the context menu, by right-clicking on the image asset, and selecting Edit.

Let’s say you want to flip the image. Click the flip icon at the top and Save. Now your flipped image will render in place with the new edited image.

If you wish to undo a change, simply click the Undo button. You can also delete the last placement, or click Delete All to remove anything added to an image.

To remove a crop or rotation of an image, select Reset to return the image to it’s original state.

Notice that your original file now contains the edited image, so if you want to retain the original image, you might want to create a duplicate.

This can be accomplished by first branching the image asset.

From the File View Panel, you can branch an asset by either right-clicking, then select branch, and it will save your image as a new branch. You can also select Branch from the Edit dropdown.  Branching assets is a best practice when working in the CMS, as branching includes a publishing workflow. For more information on branching assets, see our training video entitled Branching in V3.

In summary, here’s all the image editing options available to you:

You have the ability to create custom crop sizes, or predefined aspect ratios, such as square, 3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 7:5, 16:9

Flip- Ability to flip along the X axis (Left/Right), or the Y Axis (Up/Down)

Rotate – allows for rotating 30 degrees at a time, or custom amounts in the slider bar

Draw- Draw either freehand or straight lines. You can customize the color with entering a Hex Color Code, or choose from the few colors offered

Shape- Create basic shapes (circle, rectangle, triangle), and choose the fill color and stroke weight required.

Icon- Place icons such as arrows, location markers, speech bubbles, or upload a custom icon to be placed over an image.

Text- Allows for basic text overlay. You can create a text box and place anywhere on an image. You can Bold, Italic, Underline, or change the size of your text.

Mask- This feature allows for superimposing another image over your original.

Filter- Choose from predefined image filters, or adjust the Brightness, Noise, Transparency, etc.

You should now have a better understanding on using the image editing tool found within V3. We have seen with the built-in editing tool, you can crop, flip, rotate, draw, place shapes and icons, create text overlays, and using image masking and filtering, all without leaving your CMS instance!
