DQM Checkpoints and Standards

Checkpoints - Use correctly nested headings

Assistive technologies and other browsers rely upon the literal mark-up of the page to determine structure. Items display bold or in a bigger font are not interpreted to be structural elements. To facilitate navigation and understanding of overall document structure, authors should use headings that are properly nested. Heading elements that are properly nested help users of assistive technologies understand the structure of the information on the web page.

Heading structure also plays an important part of search engine optimization. The search engine spider checks for heading elements as it looks at your web page. Each search engine spider will prioritize the importance of the headings in a different way.

Affects Accessibility (Page headings and subheadings should always be used hierarchically. Do not skip heading levels. See WCAG 2, 2.4.10)
