DQM Checkpoints and Standards

Checkpoints - The title tag should contain more than one word

Why is this important?

The page title provides the context of what the page is about and will give users an idea if this is a page they would like to read. Apart from the page title being the first item being read for most screen readers it also shows up in lists, search engines and when it is linked from different mediums such as social media.

The page title needs to contain more than one word in order to be descriptive enough for a user to decide if this is the page they would like to read. For SEO ,the page title provides an area where the author can add key words which they believe are useful for search engines. This is why a good description would be beneficial to have a higher chance of ranking for that specific page.

How can I resolve this issue?

Update the page title so that it is more than one word. Think of key words that users would search for if they would like to know about the content of the page.

What topics do this checkpoint affect?

  • Accessibility (WCAG 2 Level A, 2.4.2)
  • SEO
  • Usability

Can you explain how this checkpoint works?

The checkpoint examines the page and reports and issue if the <title> element contains just one word.
