DQM Checkpoints and Standards

Checkpoints - Do not use justified text

Why is this important?

People with certain cognitive disabilities have problems reading text that is both left and right justified. The uneven spacing between words in fully justified text can cause "rivers of white" space to run down the page making reading difficult for users with visual or cognitive impairments and in some cases impossible. Text justification can also cause words to be spaced closely together, so that it is difficult for them to locate word boundaries.

How can I resolve this issue?

Replace code and css that from Justified to instead use left-aligned text for left-to-right languages and right-aligned text for right-to left languages.

What topics do this checkpoint affect?

  • Accessibility (WCAG 2 Level AAA, 1.4.8)

Can you explain how this checkpoint works?

The checkpoint examines the entire a page and reports and issue if the text-align of an element is defined as "justify".
