Provide "alt" text for each clickable hotspot within an imagemap

Why is this important?

Image maps are used to define regions within a larger image as links. For instance, a Web site featuring a U.S. map with clickable states uses image maps. Although image maps can be visually appealing, unless special precautions are taken, screen readers will not be able to read the embedded links properly.

How can I resolve this issue?

Alternative text should be added as an attribute of the image to describe the links on the image map.

What topics do this checkpoint affect?

  • Accessibility (WCAG 2.1 Level A, 1.1.1)

Can you explain how this checkpoint works?

This checkpoint examines the page and reports if within the <area> element, an alt attribute is not found.
