PDFs - Documents should have a meaningful title specified

Why is this important?

The Title property of a PDF can be read out by screen readers in order for the user to identify what the PDF is about. This is useful when PDFs are in websites because it allows the user to understand and decide if they would like to read the PDF or go back to the website.

How can I resolve this issue?

Add a PDF title property in PDF files in your website. A descriptive title for a PDF document can be specified for assistive technology by using the /Title entry in the document information dictionary and by setting the DisplayDocTitle flag to True in a viewer preferences dictionary. Document titles identify the current location without requiring users to read or interpret page content.

Checklist for PDF creation and management:

  • When saving documents to PDF always specify that they should be ‘tagged’
  • Give your PDF a descriptive title – this will appear in search results
  • Specify the document language in the document properties
  • Generate a table of contents
  • Run the in-built accessibility tool within Acrobat
  • Avoid using scanned documents to make PDFs
