Link text longer than [80] characters in length

Why is this important?

Short and descriptive link text makes it easier to navigate through a website. Assistive technology users can also request that only links be read out instead of the entire page. Which is why it is recommended to limit the number of characters in order to make it more efficient to read through the links on the page.

How can I resolve this issue?

Reword long link text so it is shorter than the recommended character length

What topics do this checkpoint affect?

  • Usability

Can you explain how this checkpoint works?

This checkpoint examines the entire HTML source code. It searches for a link then counts the characters between the starting and ending link tag <a>Count Characters here<a/>. The page is flagged as an issue if any link text has more than 80 characters, this includes white spaces.
