Images between [50 – 200] KB

Why is this important?

Larger image file sizes will increase download time. Before using high resolution images, consider the following:

  • Some users will be paying per KB of mobile data that they download.
  • There may be multiple images used on a page.
  • Users, in particular the ones that have low bandwidth connections, are not happy to wait for the websites to load their images.
  • If images are slow to download, users may miss the message you are trying to put out there.

As large image files can drag the page-load time of your site down this will affect the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) of your website which is used by Google when evaluating page experience of your website for their search engine ranking.

How can I resolve this issue?

Change the image you have used to one that is smaller than [50 – 200] KB. If you have an image editor such as GIMP or Photoshop you could look to optimize the resolution of your image for web use.

What topics do this checkpoint affect?

  • SEO
  • Usability

Can you explain how this checkpoint works?

This checkpoint will scan the image for the image size to see if it between [50 - 200] KB, if the image file size is larger than the specified range then it will be reported as an error. Note that there are other variations of this checkpoint that specifies a different file sizes. The checkpoint will flag images based on the file size specified in the checkpoint.
