All pages should contain an
heading

Why is this important?

Having a Heading 1
element on your page can improve your search engine ranking. Including keywords within the heading can make specific pages easier to find.

Heading 1
also allows users of accessibility technologies, like screen readers, to have a better understanding of what the page is about. Of the six heading levels HTML provides, Heading 1
is defined as the most important which explains the weight given to it by assistive technologies and search engines.

How can I resolve this issue?

Review the content of the webpage, the page title and think about what key words which someone would use in a search engine that is relevant to the page. Create a short statement based on these areas and set this statement as the Heading 1
of the page.

What topics do this checkpoint affect?

 • Accessibility (WCAG 2.1 Level A, SC 1.3.1)
 • SEO

Can you explain how this checkpoint works?

This checkpoint looks for the presence of the
heading element. If this is not present on the page, then it will be reported as an error.
